Herbicide resistant crops: History, development and current technologies
نویسنده
چکیده
Advances in biotechnology have led to development and commercialization of several herbicide-resistant crops (HRCs) in the mid-1990s. HRCs survive herbicide treatment that previously would have killed the crop along with targetted weeds. Both transgenic (created through stable integration of a foreign gene) and non-transgenic (developed through traditional plant breeding) HRCs are commercially available to farmers. Although several HRCs are available, only transgenic HRCs, such as, glyphosateand glufosinate-resistant crops appear to have greatest impact and dominate the market. HRCs are readily accepted in North and South America and are slowly making inroads into other parts of world. Farmers who have chosen HRCs must have seen some economic and weed control benefits; otherwise, the rapid increase in area planted to HRCs in recent years would not have occurred. There are benefits and risks associated with the use of HRCs as a weed management tool. The benefits of HRCs for weed management outweigh the risks based on current knowledge. HRCs should not be relied on solely to the exclusion of other weed control measures and should be used within integrated weed management programmes.

Herbicide-Resistant Crops: Utilities and Limitations for Herbicide-Resistant Weed Management
Since 1996, genetically modified herbicide-resistant (HR) crops, particularly glyphosate-resistant (GR) crops, have transformed the tactics that corn, soybean, and cotton growers use to manage weeds. The use of GR crops continues to grow, but weeds are adapting to the common practice of using only glyphosate to control weeds. Growers using only a single mode of action to manage weeds need to ch...

Since transgenic, bromoxynil-resistant cotton and glufosinate-resistant canola were introduced in 1995, planting of transgenic herbicide-resistant crops has grown substantially, revolutionizing weed management where they have been available. Before 1995, several commercial herbicide-resistant crops were produced by biotechnology through selection for resistance in tissue culture. However, non-t...

The advent of biotechnology-derived, herbicide-resistant crops has revolutionized farming practices in many countries. Facile, highly effective, environmentally sound, and profitable weed control methods have been rapidly adopted by crop producers who value the benefits associated with biotechnology-derived weed management traits. But a rapid rise in the populations of several troublesome weeds...
متن کاملA Review on Production of Glyphosate-Resistant Plants with Emphasis on Molecular Methods
Herbicide-resistant plants are one of the most common plants that comprise the majority of the total population of transgenic plants. Glyphosate is an herbicide that controls a wide range of plant species. Position of these herbicides reaction is 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) that only exists in plants and some bacteria. This herbicide was known to be suitable and safe for...

Since its commercial introduction in 1974, glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] has become the dominant herbicide worldwide. There are several reasons for its success. Glyphosate is a highly effective broad-spectrum herbicide, yet it is very toxicologically and environmentally safe. Glyphosate translocates well, and its action is slow enough to take advantage of this. Glyphosate is the only ...
